Seattle, Washington

A need for a library in my own back yard!

While we have great public libraries in Seattle, it is hard for homeless families to access them. When parents are struggling to feed their children, and living on the street, to get themselves and their children to a library is very challenging. This is why it's important to bring libraries to them.

When kids have turbulent home lives and change schools, it's very easy for them to fall behind in school. Once a child falls behind, it takes lots of effort to catch them back up. If children have access to reading materials, they can keep themselves at the same level as their peers.

What is Mary's Place?

Mary's Place empowers homeless women, children, and families to reclaim their lives. Mary’s Place was established in 1999 as day center for homeless women. Their newest shelter is in White Center, Seattle. It opened on June 21st, 2017.This shelter currently has a small library, but it doesn't have Adult books, and is in need for some improved shelving. Luckily, there are currently West Seattle librarians who volunteer there time to organize the library.
